The Dreaded Large Home Buying Down-payment Myth

As we get older we seem to ponder all those checklists. Did you turn the stove off? Did you buy those mythology socks? They aren't on sale every day, you know. But we really tend to stew the most on the ones geared to making sure you are really an adult and not just another income taxed social security stamped drone, either. (You better check the stove. Just saying.)

The biggest one on the checklist, of course, being: buying a home. Let's face it, it's an expensive endeavor. It also doesn't stop after the purchase is completed BUT let me, Kurstin Raposa, let you in on a little secret...

You, yeah YOU, can most likely afford a home today.

YES. YOU CAN. It's not just an affirmation to get you excited and motivated (although, please, don't let it stop you from being that too) but it's true! I sat down today with lender Corey White from USA Mortgage about some options available to those interested in finally checking home buying off their adulting to-do list.

Here in Jefferson County in the lovely state of Missouri (talk to a local lender if this state portion does not apply to you) they, being the state, want you to be in a home and paying all those lovely taxes. So what does that mean? It means they have programs in place to make sure this is a high possibility!

Corey has assisted buyers with a credit score as low as 560 to be approved for a loan and we got them into a home of their own! Not their parent's basement. A REAL PROPERTY. Yeah it's taxed every year but those taxes contribute to the growth of local and state economies.

I know it's hard to attribute altruistic personality traits to government bodies but it's true too. Public school systems and the police don't work for free. And they shouldn't. I wouldn't hedge my bets on the level of service we'd receive if these amenities were free.

Curious about the validity of my statements? Here are some links for more information:
